January 31st, 2018, is Bell Let's Talk Day. It's a day where people are encouraged to post, tweet, call, text, and most importantly, talk about mental health. It started in 2010, as an attempt to get more Canadians to engage in conversation about mental health. Although we all know that mental health struggles exist, we rarely talk openly, candidly, and compassionately about them. Many people have limited information about how mental health effects our everyday lives, and some have misinformation from stereotypes, stigma, and media portrayals that are often more sensational than accurate. Because of this, we don't know how to talk to each other about mental health, and when someone is struggling and reaches out, we go to unhelpful comments, like "Someone's got it worse than you", "Just think positive", or "It's not such a big deal". We don't know how to support each other. But all this is changing, as Bell head's into another year encouraging people to learn more and talk openly about mental health issues. On their website you'll find toolkits that help you understand how to talk to someone who's struggling. Conversation tips, advice on how to listen, educational resources, and ideas on how to promote mental health wellness in your community are all available at https://letstalk.bell.ca/en/. Along with encouraging people to let go of the stigma around mental health, Bell is putting its money where its mouth is, and contributing funds to non-profit mental health foundations across Canada. An indigenous youth service in Winnipeg received $150,000 from last year's collection. So visit the website, and find out how you can contribute, by doing something you do every day. Let's Tweet. Let's Text. Let's Talk.
